Aprons weren't always worn to keep your dress clean while working. There were fancy silk aprons that were worn mainly as a fashion accessory. They could be worn while doing needlework or other light tasks around the house. Engravings in fashion magazines show aprons with lots of fancy trimming. I've also seen some lovely original silk aprons with oodles of trimmings on them. Some have self fabric ruching, others velvet ribbon and some even had braid sewn to the apron in an intricate design. Many aprons were attached to a silk cord with tassels on the ends that wrapped around the back and tied in the front. Most of these fancy aprons had tiny pockets sewn to the front as well. They could hold small items, but were mainly for decoration.

This silk apron has three rows of black velvet ribbon sewn to the bottom edge and two triangle lattice pockets made completely of velvet ribbon. The waist edge has been gauged to the waistband
